Fall 2022 Greetings from the Home of the Eagles . . . Yoncalla High School is beginning to look a little more like “normal” these days as we are moving beyond the Pandemic. Classes began the week before Labor Day weekend, the volleyball and football turnouts appear to show greater student participation and the school, in my opinion, has never looked better (please note, on the last page, some recent pictures of the school showing some of the upgrades to the building – looking good!). I will be working, again, with Ms. Kristy Westbrooks and the Class of 2023. Our core message will continue to emphasize the importance of post-secondary education as we will explore all the post-secondary options available to students. I was pleased with our efforts with the Class of 2022 in that we awarded nine YAA scholarships. That represents a tie for the largest number of YAA scholarships awarded to any YHS graduating class. It will be Kristy’s and my goal, to award scholarships to 100% of the students in the Class of 2023. I have repeatedly told YHS graduating seniors that if they can be connected to a post-secondary program by the time they graduate, the YAA Promise is that we will be there to financially assist with their transition! This was the first year for the YHS All-School Reunion to be under the direction of Wayne Van Loon (65) and he reported another good turnout! The annual gathering for next year will happen on August 13, 2023 beginning at 11:00 am at the Curtin Park. Wayne would like to give special recognition to Kay Van Krevelen (60) for her managing efforts for the past ten years and also for her assistance to Wayne on this year’s reunion. Also receiving kudos from Wayne for their help was to his wife Phyllis, brothers Jim Van Loon and Charley Van Loon and Charley’s wife Yvette Van Loon. Wayne is seeking some volunteer help. Specifically, he would like someone to volunteer to assist with the preparation and setup for the beverage table and also for someone who could ensure the potluck tables are properly organized in the Pavilion. Please contact Wayne by phone (503-460-7274) or by email (wevl@pacifier.com) if you are willing to give an assist. There is a park rental fee but the biggest expense for putting on the reunion is related to printing and postage for the postcards. If you would like to be notified about next year’s reunion, Wayne is asking that you send to him your email address (even if you had already signed in with your email address at the last reunion). Wayne will continue to send out cards to folks who have not given him an email address. Finally, Wayne would like to thank everyone for their donations, noting that next year’s reunion is fully funded! There is another major YHS reunion being planned for next summer. EVERYONE (all YHS graduates, family, friends, teachers, coaches, administrators, teaching assistants and everybody not mentioned) is also encouraged to attend but the classes from the 70’s, 80’s 90’s and 2000’s are specifically being targeted. It will be held in the YHS gym on August 5th and 6th. Mike Bendele is organizing this BIG event and I promised to give him a hand. The school district is making the parking area below the school, at the baseball/softball fields, available for overnight RV parking. Because there have been major renovations to the school (including the gym), we hope to have opportunities to tour the entire building. At this time, we are planning for “food wagons” to be on site to meet our hunger and thirst needs. With two big screen TV’s already mounted on the gym walls, we have the capability of showing video. We are seeking someone with the desire and skill to create a video depicting school life during these years . . . probably using the old YHS yearbooks (copies should be available at the school). We are also seeking any of your thoughts and/or ideas that will help make this, one-time event, a truly special event for all those attending! Please reach out to Mike by phone (503-709-4689) or by email (mbendele@ipw-inc.net). Let’s pack the gym! The YAA is getting technical assistance on our website and Facebook from Taryn (Lowes) Owens (13). Taryn is a former YAA scholarship recipient graduating from Oregon State University in 2017. She continues to live in the Yoncalla area and runs her own business, Cailene Creatives, out of her home. Thank you Taryn!! Douglas High School, during the 2021-22 school year, hosted a four team boys’ basketball tournament. Three of the four head coaches in the tournament were YHS graduates and all with multiple years of head coaching experience. Bid Van Loon’s Douglas Trojans were hosting the tournament while Darwin Terry’sPleasant Hill Billies and Bill Shaw’s Reedsport Braves were two of the other three teams participating. From Bill’s and Darwin’s perspectives, Bid was probably not the most gracious host as the Trojans won the tournament championship! We are now heading into our 12th season of fundraising for YHS scholarships. As stated earlier, the YHS staff touts the Class of 2023 as a relatively strong academic group. I am looking forward to meeting and working with another fine group of YHS graduates! The YAA awarded nearly $30,000 in scholarships and reserved another $5,000 for the Class of 2022 as second year scholarships. As you recall, to qualify for the second year scholarships, students, simply, need to successfully complete their first year of post-secondary training and then, simply, ask for a second year scholarship. For all students qualifying for second year scholarships, the $5,000 will be equally divided among them. The YAA believes these second year scholarships help to serve as an “incentive” as well as adding a certain level of confidence for the continuing pursuit of the student’s post-secondary education. Now, after our first eleven years, the YAA has awarded about $188,000 in local scholarships. This total does not include the base dollar amounts awarded through the established Memorial Scholarships. The Class of 2022 was the first class to receive a Teddy Bowman Memorial Scholarship established by Teddy’s sister, Bonnie (Bowman) Henson. These Memorial Scholarships have added, approximately, another $60,000 in scholarship money over the same period of time. 2022 YAA Scholarship Recipients Alison Van Loon (Umpqua Community College) – YAA General Scholarship; Teddy Bowman Memorial Scholarship; J.
